Proposal submitted for 33 new houses on farmland

Plans have been revealed to redevelop farmland in Glastonbury into a housing estate.

An application for outline planning permission to build 33 new homes on the land, at Uppingstock Farm, Old Wells Road, was received by Mendip District Council this week.

Outline planning permission states that, in principle, it is possible to build on the land, and usually lasts for around three years.

The Salmon Planning company hope to build ten two-bedroom houses, eight three-bedroom houses and four four-bedroom houses on the land, as well as four one-bedroom, five two-bedroom and two three-bedroom affordable homes on the same site.

The existing farmhouse would not be altered, under the new plans, and the mature oak trees that line the site will be left in place, if the development is given the go-ahead.

A separate outline application for an area of recreational space has also been submitted to the council.

The application is due to be decided by the planning board in due course, at a date still to be decided.

The Old Wells Road area of Glastonbury has become something of a hot topic for planning applications in the town, and the proposed site is not far from where farmer Malcolm Higgins hopes to build his seven-storey, lighthouse-inspired 'sentinel'.

You can see the planning application online at www.mendip .gov.uk and searching for application number 2013/0903.
