This is Somerset -- Organisers of Glastonbury's illuminated carnival are giving the chance to children across the area to live out their dreams of being a prince or princess. The hunt is already under way for either a boy or girl to lead this year's carnival procession in November. The lucky youngster will take over the role from last year's winner, Alice Berry, who raised £1,638.11 for the carnival to take her crown. With the help of her mother, she hit the fundraising trail in Street, Glastonbury and the surrounding villages to beat other hopefuls to the crown. This year's selection process to become prince or princess will follow the same style as previous contests, with youngsters collecting sponsorship. The entrants will need to spend the weeks and months in the run-up to the carnival collecting sponsorship money from friends, family, neighbours and businesses. The one who attracts the most donations will be officially crowned and lead the carnival in November. As well as heading the colourful procession, the prince or princess will take part in various presentations and official ceremonies throughout the following year as a way of recognising her role and hard work. The carnival contest is open to children from Street, Glastonbury and the surrounding villages who are between the ages of seven and 14. Tony Frazier, secretary of the Glastonbury Carnival Committee, said: "The earlier a start is made, the more chance the children have of winning." For the chance to become this year's carnival prince or princess, telephone Sally Lee on 01458 441546, 07821 695869 or by emailing her on sally.lee888@bt.com. This year's carnival will take place on November 16, with kick-off planned for 6.30pm. For more information, visit www.glastonburycarnival.com. Reported by This is 13 hours ago.
