This is Somerset --

Exhibitions, concerts and conferences celebrating Cornwall's cultural heritage are among a number of events taking place in Penryn to coincide with this week's Gorsedh Kernow ceremony.

Under the banner of the Cornish Esedhvos, the programme runs from today until Saturday.

On display throughout the week will be the new Gorsedh Kernow Bardic Collection. Bringing together for the first time literature by and about bards, it will be on display in The Exchange at Falmouth University's Tremough campus.

On Wednesday, storyteller Mike O'Connor will be joined by harpist Barbara Griggs for an evening entitled Return to Lyonesse in Penryn Town Hall. The following day will see a Cornish book market and the launch of Cornish Bards from the Penryn-Falmouth Area at the same venue.

Echoes of Glasney is a Cornish-Breton concert of bombard and orgue featuring Eliaz Lohro Pasco, Roger Pinsent and Pyba at Penryn Methodist Church. Eliaz Lohro Pasco comes from a family immersed in the musical traditions of Brittany, but with strong Cornish connections. He recently featured as lead bombard player for Bagad De Lann-Bihoué, the foremost Breton pipe band.

The Gorsedh Kernow Open Conference, entitled Engaging the Diaspora, is at Penryn Town Hall from 10.30am to 4pm on Friday. The event, which is open to the public, is designed to look at the Cornish who live away from Cornwall, both from a historical context as well as modern migration. Then on Friday evening, Cornish Dance Society is organising a Troyl Barn Dance with Cornish band Hevva in Stuart Stephen Memorial Hall.

The Gorsedh Kernow ceremony itself will begin with a procession of several hundred blue-robed bards to College Field at Glasney College at 1.30pm on Saturday. The largest event in the Gorsedh Kernow calendar, it features the initiation of new bards and the awarding of prizes. It will be performed, weather permitting, in the open, on the site of the historic ecclesiastical centre of Glasney College, and the public is encouraged to attend.

The ceremony will be followed this year by a concert featuring Mabe Ladies Choir, Dew Vardh, Four Tunes Saxophone Quartet, Boilerhouse and Gareth Churcher Brass Quintet.

The 2013 Cornish Esedhvos will close with a Myttin Lowender Cornish language session at Penryn Town Hall on Sunday morning, followed by an Ecumenical Evensong in St Gluvias Church.
