The town of Glastonbury has a new civic leader.
At the last meeting of the town council, Susan Thurgood was elected to the position of Mayor of Glastonbury.
Out-going mayor Ian Tucker said he had enjoyed a 'remarkable' year as the head of the council.
Highlights of the year included the Olympic Torch relay and the town's diamond jubilee celebrations.
He thanked his wife, the mayoress, for helping him turn out "clean, tidy and on-time to every occasion."
He said be believed that Councillor Thurgood would make "a superb mayor."
Once elected to office, Councillor Thurgood paid tribute to Councillor Tucker.
"It has been something of a marathon just keeping up with him," she said.
For the first time in many years, the position of deputy mayor was contested.
Councillor Thurgood said: "It has been a great honour to be elected to this position, and I feel very privileged.
"I hope Glastonbury Town Council will continue to act as a cohesive team that suits the nature of our town."
She added: "I look forward to us being an open and accountable team, working for the benefit of the town."
She has chosen a cadet who will accompany her at official events, and will raise money for Action for Children during her term as mayor.
Councillor Ian Forrester nominated Councillor Denise Michell for the role, up against Councillor Jim Barron.
Councillor Michell had stood for the role of deputy mayor last year, but withdrew after finding out that Councillor Thurgood had also put herself forward for the role.
But in a secret ballot, it was Councillor Barron who won the vote to take the role, by eight votes to six. Reported by This is 15 hours ago.
