Traffic chaos as Pilton village is brought to a standstill by selfish drivers This is Somerset -- Highways chiefs are begging motorists not to ignore road diversion signs after lorry drivers caused chaos trying to slip past roadworks on the main road at Pilton on Monday morning. The A361 through the village of Pilton, between Shepton Mallet and Glastonbury, has been closed while contractors work on the road which is one of the main routes through mid-Somerset. But instead of taking the official signposted diversion that would take motorists from Glastonbury to Wells, Croscombe and back on the A361 at Shepton Mallet - drivers are chancing their luck and trying to navigate the winding narrow lanes through the village. And it is causing gridlock in for Pilton, the home to the Glastonbury Festival. Even large juggernauts have attempted to squeeze their way through, according to local residents. Within the space of a couple of hours villagers claim the large HGVs have knocked down part of a church wall, hit a telegraph pole and uprooted some of the road and snapped off telephone wires. Some are without telephone or broadband. Particularly badly hit have been Parson's Lane, Shop Lane and St Mary's Lane. A spokeswoman for Somerset County Council said highways were urgently looking into solving the problem but pleaded with all motorists not to ignore diversion signs, particularly HGVs.
